Pre-Flight Maiden Checklist & First Launch Protocol

Arriving at the field for a maiden flight can feel nerve-racking, but following this structured protocol eliminates surprises and ensures a smooth, triumphant flight.

Phase 1: Weather & Environment Check

  • Wind Speed: Less than 8 km/h (calm leaves, smoke rising nearly vertical). Early mornings (right around sunrise) typically provide the calmest, glassiest air.
  • Flight Area: An open field with at least 100 meters in every direction, clear of trees, power lines, houses, and spectators.
  • Landing Surface: Tall, soft grass is the beginner’s best friend. It absorbs awkward landings with zero airframe damage!

Phase 2: The Two-Minute Field Inspection

Stand behind the model and execute these 6 checks:

  1. Range Test: Set transmitter to low-power range check mode. Walk 30 paces away; all control surfaces should respond cleanly without jitter.
  2. Failsafe Check: Hold model securely, spin motor up to 10% throttle, and switch off transmitter. Motor must immediately cut to 0%.
  3. Control Directions (“Stick moves towards the rising surface”):
    • Right stick pushed right → Right aileron moves UP.
    • Right stick pulled back (towards you) → Elevator moves UP.
    • Left stick pushed right → Rudder moves RIGHT.
  4. Center of Gravity: Place fingers under marked wing points; plane rests level or slightly nose down.
  5. Battery Strap: Give battery pack a firm tug. It must not slide.
  6. Propeller Nut: Spin motor shaft by hand (battery disconnected); prop adapter must not slip on motor shaft.

Phase 3: The Maiden Hand Launch

Never throw an airplane upward like a baseball.

  1. Stand facing directly INTO the wind.
  2. Grip fuselage under the wing near the CG point.
  3. Advance throttle smoothly to 60% to 70% (you should feel the model wanting to pull forward from your hand).
  4. Take one step forward and give a firm, level, javelin-style throw straight forward towards the horizon.
  5. Keep your hands on the control sticks! Let the aircraft build airspeed in a gentle climb before attempting turns.

Phase 4: Trimming and First Circuit

  • Climb to two mistakes high (approximately 25 meters).
  • Reduce throttle to 50% for relaxed cruising speed.
  • If the model banks left or right hands-off, click the respective aileron/rudder trim tab 2-3 clicks until it flies straight.
  • Fly gentle figure-8 circuits over the field. Avoid flying directly overhead or behind yourself to prevent control disorientation.
  • Plan your landing after 4 to 5 minutes while ample battery voltage remains.
